I’ll admit that I haven’t added that many books to my TBR list this month. Maybe only 10 due to the fact that I feel very behind on my reading and my TBR shelf is looming over me. Nonetheless, some great looking reads came across my many screens this month, including books on cancel culture, cobalt mining, Tupac, drugs, and more.
Happy reading!
The Canceling of the American Mind: Cancel Culture Undermines Trust, Destroys Institutions, and Threatens Us All―But There Is a Solution
By Greg Lukianoff and Rikki Schlott
Published October 17, 2023 from Simon & Schuster
I just came across this book this week on Twitter from the author Greg Lukianoff. I was a big fan of his previous book with Jon Haidt, The Coddling of the American Mind, and I’m excited for to read this one when it comes out later this year.
Cobalt Red: How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives
By Siddharth Kara
Published January 2023 from St. Martin’s Press
I came across this book and Instagram and it was an immediate add to my TBR list. The Congo is an ever-fascinating place and is largely considered the richest country on earth in terms of natural resources. I’m curious to learn more.
Psychonauts: Drugs and the Making of the Modern Mind
By Mike Jay
Published April 2023 from Yale University Press
Did you see the cover? The title? The topic? What an all-star looking book. I have high expectations for this. Undoubtedly it’s going to cover early LSD explorations, but I have high expectations for learning about new tales of drug adventures.
Daniel Coit Gilman and the Birth of the American Research University
By Michael T. Benson
Published October 2022 from Johns Hopkins University Press
If you’ve been around here long enough, you know how much I love higher education history. I’m super curious to read a devoted book to our world-class research universities here in the US, and was happy to have found this.
Grand Delusion: The Rise and Fall of American Ambition in the Middle East
By Steven Simon
Published April 2023 from Penguin Press
This is a recent release that’s been around the major book newsletters. I don’t have much depth of knowledge about America’s politicking in the Middle East so I’m hoping this is a helpful intro.
Ignorance: A Global History
By Peter Burke
Published February 2023 from Yale University Press
A+ cover. This also looks like a great short read on a fun topic and caught my interest enough to land on my TBR list.
Tupac Shakur: The Authorized Biography
By Staci Robinson
Published April 2023 from Crown
I’m a huge hip hop fan and was immediately interested in a good biography of one of the greatest rappers of all time. Plus, Crown often does a good job with celebrity biographies so I have high expectations.
The Nature of Oaks: The Rich Ecology of Our Most Essential Native Trees
By Douglass W. Tallamy
Published March 2021 from Timber Press
I’m currently reading Otherlands (review next week) and got this book recommendation from a Twitter follower in response to a post I made about drip tip adaptations on plants. I love a good niche deep dive and added this to my TBR list.
